2018FFWC: Canadian Women’s Team notches two straight victories on Day 2 of round robin
Men’s team suffer back-to-back defeats at the hands of Mexico and Denmark
Both the Women’s and Men’s Teams are heading in different directions after Day 2 of competition at the 2018 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Panama City, Panama.
The Women’s National Team began Day 2 squaring off against Brazil. At halftime, the Canadians enjoyed a 27-0 lead over the Brazilians. While the Brazilians got a pair of touchdowns in the second half, it wasn’t enough as Canada secured their first victory of the tournament with a 28-12 win.
In their second game of the day, the Canadians took on the Czech Republic. Again, the Canadians did not allow any points to their opponents in the first half and held a 32-0 advantage over the Czechs. By the end of the game, the Canadians cruised to a 45-13 victory to go 2-1 in round robin play.
The women will end their round robin play against Guatemala at 2:15pm EST and Japan at 8:30pm EST.
After getting by Israel in their first game, the Men’s National Team faced another stiff opponent in Mexico. After the first half, things looked promising as Canada was up 31-19. However, the Mexicans mounted a big comeback in the second half to hand the Canadians their first loss of the tournament. The final score of the game was 51-49 for Mexico.
Hoping to rebound, the Canadians battled Denmark in their second game of the day. The Danes had the lead after the first half 21-12 over the Canadians. Overall, the Canadians could not handle the competition and the Danes won the game 28-18. The Men’s National Team is now 1-2 after Day 2 of the tournament.
On Saturday August 11, 2018, Canada will battle Guatemala at 2:15pm EST and then host Panama at 7:15pm EST in their final games of the round robin portion of the tournament.
