45 PLAYERS NAMED TO THE 2010 SENIOR NATIONAL WOMEN’S TACKLE FOOTBALL ROSTER
OTTAWA, CANADA – March 26, 2010 – Canada’s top female football players will come together this summer in the capital city of Sweden for the historic international competition for women’s football. While Canada is ranked second heading into the tournament, they will face teams from the USA, Germany, Austria, Finland, and Sweden. Seeding for the six nations that will send their national team to Scandinavia was determined based on the number of female American football participants in each country established by data recorded in the 2009 IFAF Benchmarking Study.
Head Coach Larry Harlow, the co-founder of New Brunswick Women’s Football League, the New Brunswick Jr. Girls Football League and the Maritime Women’s Football League, will lead the national team into Sweden. He is currently the Head Coach of the Saint John Storm, a team he has transformed from last place into the Maritime Champions.
“I think the quality of players and positional coaching staff will put Canada in the top 4 teams at the 2010 world tournament,” said head coach Larry Harlow. “The players are enthusiastic and very excited about this opportunity, and they have worked very hard to make this team.”
The coaching staff also includes Jeff Yausie (offensive line), Josh Sacobie (Quarterbacks), Rick Sowieta (linebackers), Tannis Wilson (defensive line), Jim Mather (offensive coordinator and receivers), Marcus Fitzgerald (running backs) and Craig Bachynski (defensive coordinator and defensive backs). The team will be accompanied by Shannon Donovan, the GM and Bill Murphy, the equipment manager.
Earlier this month, regional camps were held in Saskatoon, SK, and Oromocto, NB. The final training camp will take place in Saint John, NB in June. Quarterback coach Josh Sacobie believes that now that the team has been chosen, the challenge will be to help this group come together over the next few months. “The final camp will be intense and mentally challenging but how well we can bond as a team will lead to our success in Sweden,” coach Sacobie said.
The championship will kick off for Canada on Sunday, June 27 when they take on host team Sweden. On Thursday, July 1st, Canada will then play against the women’s national team from Germany. The top teams in each group will meet in the IFAF Women’s World Championship Gold Medal Game on Saturday, July 3 following the Bronze Medal and fifth place games.
