British Columbia to host provinces from coast to coast at 2020 Football Canada Cup
Tournament to run in late July at University of British Columbia
Ottawa, ON (March 10th, 2020) – Football Canada is pleased to announce that the 2020 Football Canada Cup will be hosted in British Columbia.
The tournament will run from July 18-25 2020 at the University of British Columbia (UBC). With this announcement, it marks the first time the province has hosted the event since its return to the Football Canada Cup competition.
British Columbia made its return in the 2017 event that was hosted at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
Eight provincial teams from coast to coast will compete for gold in the national championship-two time defending champions Saskatchewan, Quebec, Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, host British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.
“We are excited to host what is expected to be another highly competitive event while welcoming the national football community to a province that is rich in tradition and history in this sport.” commented Frank Naso, British Columbia Provincial Football Association (BCPFA) President.
As the Football Canada Cup serves as a national showcase of the top players in Canada, this is the top yearly recruiting event for USPORTS programs.
In one of the most dramatic and exciting finishes in tournament history, Saskatchewan won their second consecutive championship after downing the perennial Quebec, 16-9. Despite earning the silver medal, Quebec earned respect because of its semi-final game that made tournament history. The team needed four overtimes to defeat Alberta to earn the right to play Saskatchewan in the championship game.
“Once again, we are looking forward to working with the BCPFA after they hosted a successful Under-16 Western Challenge in Kamloops last summer,” said Shannon Donovan, Football Canada’s Executive Director. “Our goal is to ensure that all participants and members of the community have an enjoyable and memorable experience at the 2020 Football Canada Cup.”
