Canadian Flag Football League announces dates and locations for regionals and nationals

After a highly successful debut in 2019, the Canadian Flag Football League (CFFL) is back for year two, with a continued focus on strengthening a national adult flag football brand.

“Football Canada is committed to growing off our success of the inaugural championships.” Football Canada President Jim Mullin said.  

“The CFFL is a foundation for our national teams. Establishing the Top 24 is a way to ensure our National team is a leader on the world stage.” 

Like last year, three regional championships are scheduled across the nation, with the winners advancing to nationals, scheduled for August 14-15 in Ottawa, Ontario. The teams for regionals are selected by each CFFL provincial conference, with two teams being the maximum allowed for each division with Ontario and Quebec being exceptions. Ontario and Quebec will be allowed to submit four teams to Central Regionals. Provincial sport organizations will determine the selection process for teams to move out of their respective conferences. 

This year’s Eastern Regional is scheduled for May 16-17 in Halifax, Nova Scotia while Western Regionals is scheduled to be hosted in Edmonton May 8-9. Montreal is scheduled to play host to Central Regionals in June, a specific date is still to be determined. 

New this year are the options for open recreational male, female, and mixed divisions at all three regional events. There will be no player evaluations and no pathway to nationals associated with these divisions. More information surrounding registration and team fees will be released at a later date. 

Prize money is also available at both the regional and national stages for competitive divisions. Winners of regionals will get $1500, while the runners up earn $1000. National champions will receive $2000, with second place getting $1500.

Additionally, the winners of the CFFL National Championships will have the opportunity to represent Canada on the international stage. Players from the top two teams of their respective divisions will automatically earn a spot on Football Canada’s Top 24 and will compete at the 2021 International Bowl. 

Last year, Manitoba’s Most Wanted (Winnipeg, MB) took home the inaugural CFFL title for the men. On the women’s side, Team Canada (Saskatoon, SK) took home gold. Players from these two teams were selected to Football Canada’s Top 24 and represented Canada this past January at the International Bowl. These two teams will receive an automatic bid to 2020 Nationals as the top seeded teams in their respective divisions from the 2019 CFFL National Championship as Team Canada.
