Canadian QB Brandon Bridge possible Friday night starter

A rookie will start for the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night and it might be Canadian quarterback Brandon Bridge. The 2009 Junior National Team alumnus, played the majority of the second half of last week’s game following injuries to the Alouettes’ first and second string quarterbacks.

Should Bridge be the Als starter he would be the first Canadian to do so since Giulio Caravatta with the BC Lions on October 27, 1996. Last week Bridge became the first Canadian to play QB in a CFL regular season game since Danny Brannigan did so with the Argonauts in 2010.

Montreal is expected to name their starter approximately 1 hour before their 7:30 p.m. ET kick-off.

Bridge’s performance last week was impressive granted it was his first CFL game and had yet to receive reps with the first team offence.

After being selected in the fourth round of the CFL Draft out of South Alabama (NCAA), Bridge was expected to be brought along more gradually. The Mississauga, Ontario native now finds himself as the most experienced QB on the active roster.

Battling Bridge for playing time on Friday night against Calgary is newly signed Rakeem Cato out of Marshall. The duo of Bridge and Cato are likely to split time against Calgary.

Should Bridge find success on Friday night, he could be a trendsetter for future Canadian QBs in the CFL.
