Constantin, Asselin named to 2018 Junior National Team coaching staff

Preparations underway for 2018 worlds

Football Canada announced today that GLEN CONSTANTIN and JEAN-PHILIPPE ASSELIN will serve as Junior National Team defensive and offensive coordinators respectively under head coach Steve Sumarah. The trio will lead Canada’s U19 national team at the International Bowl (2017-2018) and Junior National Team at the 2018 IFAF U19 World Championship.

“Both Glen (Constantin) and JP (Asselin) are tremendous additions to the Junior National Team program,” Steve Sumarah said. “They bring a wealth of national and international experience to the coaching staff and will help lead Team Canada into the 2018 world championship.”

The coaching staff will begin preparations for 2017 by identifying players at 2016 Football Canada Cup in Winnipeg.

Constantin returns to Football Canada’s Junior National Team program after last serving as head coach at the 2009 IFAF U19 World Championship in Canton, Ohio. The current Laval Rouge et Or head coach was also involved with Canada’s NFL Global Junior contingent, taking over as head coach in 2007 after serving five years as defensive coordinator.

Joining Laval in 1996 as defensive coordinator, Constantin took over as head coach in December 2000. During his tenure as head coach, the Rouge et Or have been one of the most successful university football programs in Canada, winning Vanier Cups (national championships) in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

JP Asselin currently serves as offensive coordinator at Carleton University, helping revive the Ravens football program in 2013 after a 15-year hiatus. Asselin has also served the same role with Ontario’s under-18 provincial team at the 2016 Football Canada Cup as well as with the U18 national team at the 2016 International Bowl. Prior to joining Carleton, he served as head coach (2010-2011) and an assistant offensive coordinator (2008-2009) at his alma mater, the University of Ottawa.

Led by current Junior National Team head coach, Warren Craney, Canada will compete this July at the 2016 IFAF U19 World Championship in Harbin, China.
