Football Canada announces locations and dates for 2019 Flag Events
With an exciting year ahead, Football Canada is pleased to unveil the locations and dates for 2019 flag events.
On the heels of the inaugural season of the Canadian Flag Football League (CFFL), the season will kick off with the first of three regional championships. From May 11-13, 2019, the University of Ottawa will host the CFFL Central Championship.
The next weekend, Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick is the site of the CFFL Eastern Championship. On the same weekend (May 17-19, 2019), the CFFL Western Championship takes place in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The winners from three events will compete at the CFFL National Championship in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from July 26-28, 2019.
“This is a special year for flag football in our nation as we are continuing the exponential growth of the sport through the creation of the national pathway through the CFFL,” commented Aaron Geisler, Football Canada’s Manager, Program Development. “This will be a year of unchartered waters and we are looking forward to seeing the high level of competition.
It will be a busy week in Saskatchewan as the University of Regina’s Mosaic Stadium is the site of the Under-16 Western Regional Flag, the Under-18 and Under-20 National Flag Championships July 26-28, 2019.
“Football Saskatchewan is pleased and excited to host one regional and three National Flag Football Championships in 2019. Flag football is an exciting, fast-paced sport played by both male and female athletes at all ages and has been our biggest growth area in terms of participation in the last 5 years. We look forward to hosting the rest of Canada in 2019. We will work hard to host great events!” stated Jeff Yausie, Football Saskatchewan Executive Director.
Last year in Regina, British Columbia defeated Manitoba 47-20 to win the Under-16 Male Division while Saskatchewan earned a 38-0 shutout victory over Team West White in the Under-16 Female Division.
In the 2018 under-18 National Championships, Manitoba claimed gold after edging British Columbia 20-19 in the Male Division while Saskatchewan downed Quebec 13-6 at Saint Mary’s Huskies Stadium in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The conclusion of the flag football season will be the Under-16 Eastern Regional Flag Championships from August 2-4, 2019 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
In Halifax last year, Quebec made it a clean sweep of both under-16 divisions. In the male division, Quebec won gold after defeating Nova Scotia 26-21 while Quebec (1) defeated Quebec (2) 18-13 to claim the championship.
“We are looking forward to working with the various Provincial groups in welcoming the top athletes and coaches from the nation at events this season in New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island,” commented Renee Bellavance, Football Canada’s Events Manager. “Our goal is to ensure that participants and the community have a memorable, but enjoyable experience at CFFL Championships, Under-18 National Flag as well as Under-16 Eastern and Western Regional Flag Championships.”
