Football Canada unveils the 2018 World Junior Championship roster
For 45 of Canada’s top male tackle players, the opportunity to represent their country internationally is now a dream come true as Football Canada has unveiled the 2018 World Junior Championship roster.
Additionally, 10 players have been placed on a reserve roster.
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Junior Championships will be held in Mexico City this upcoming July. Canada is the defending champions, having won the title at the 2016 event in Harbin, China. Previously, Canada won gold at the 2012 tournament as well as a pair of silver medals at both the 2009 and 2014 Championships.
The 2018 roster will have some championship experience as defensive lineman Matthew Goodall (Mount Albert, Ontario) was part of the 2016 Junior National Team that brought home gold back from Harbin, China.
As for the composition of this roster, 33 players competed last month at the 2018 International Bowl in Arlington, Texas. The other 12 players helped Canada defeat the United States 44-26 in the under-18 game at the event. Among the players on this roster are 2018 International Bowl Offensive MVP Jalen Philpot (Surrey, British Columbia) and Defensive MVP Aidan John (Halifax, Nova Scotia).
Canada will be led by Junior National Team Head Coach Steve Sumarah. He will be joined by Offensive Coordinator JP Asselin and Defensive Coordinator Jeff Cummins. Furthermore, Canada will have additional experience with Jamie Barresi as Quarterbacks Coach, Gord Beattie as Offensive Line Coach, Bryan Brandford as Linebackers Coach, Sebastien Tetreault as Defensive Line Coach and Marc Fortier as Defensive Backs Coach.
For Sumarah, this is the continuation of achieving the goal of putting together a team with the finest athletes from Canada, a process which began from the moment he assumed the position in 2016.
“I’m very excited about this roster we have coming forward for the World Junior Championships this summer in Mexico City,” Sumarah commented of the roster. “We have a great mix of under-19 and under-18’s from this past year’s International Bowl.”
“Some guys really stepped up and showed their worth for this program. It’s going to be exciting come July to have all of these guys together and to put forward the best team together we have to represent our country.”
