Get to know U19 National Team Linebacker Isiah Joseph

Isaiah Joseph is a linebacker from Hamilton, Ontario who will be competing at the 2018 International Bowl in Arlington, Texas as a member of the National Under-19 team.

A normal weekend ritual fueled the defensive standout’s passion for the gridiron.

“When I was really young, usually on Saturdays, after me and my brother watched early morning cartoons, my dad would always put on sports,” he recalled.  “It would usually be highlights of football.”

“At the time, I really didn’t like it because I wanted to watch cartoons but as I got a little bit older I really liked these grown men running really fast and hitting each other.  I started to fall in love with the sport.”

During his career, Joseph has played in the Central Ontario Minor Football League’s Junior Tiger-Cats, Hamilton Ironmen of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL). Cathedral Gaels of the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association (HWCAA), Canada Prep Raiders and Canada West Universities Athletic Association’s (CWUAA) University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

His final season with the Ironmen was the highlight of the linebacker’s career.

“Thar was really good getting to represent my city,” he reflected.  “I think it was a successful career and I was named as an all-star for the third time in my career.”

On the field, Joseph tries to emulate NFL player Aldon Smith.

“He’s another tall, lanky type of pass-rusher,” he added.

Away from the gridiron, Joseph said his father has been a constant source of inspiration.

“He’s just a hard-working guy,” he said.  “I remember him getting up at five, six o’clock.”

“If I can work that hard, I know that I can be successful.”

Excited from the moment National Junior Team Head Coach Steve Sumarah delivered the news he was selected to the team, Joseph is looking forward to the 2018 International Bowl.

“It really means the world to me,” he expressed.  “It’s overwhelming and incredible.”

“Most people would say they are happy to represent their country any way they can.  Being able to do it from the sport I love is just a blessing.”
