HOST ALBERTA ADVANCES TO FINAL, ONTARIO WEST TO BRONZE MEDAL GAME
Alberta played in front of a hometown contingent against Ontario West in game 7 of the 2011 Football Canada Cup. During the opening quarter both teams traded interceptions from Alberta’s Hunter Turnbull and Ontario West’s Jack Gatza. Alberta kicker Stephen Fabian opened the scoring on a 22-yard field goal attempt that missed wide left for the single point rouge. At the end of the quarter, Fabian netted a 32-yard field goal extending the host’s lead to four.
Ontario West answered back, taking the lead 6-4 on a 7-yard passing touchdown from James Roberts to Jake Frimeth which was set up by a 27-yard run from Jordan Clout and put Ontario West up 2-4. To end the first half scoring, Ontario West added a single on a Clark Green missed field goal from 27-yards.
The turning point in the game came late in the third quarter, when Alberta linebacker, Aidan Panchyshyn intercepted an Ontario West pass as Ontario West QB Roberts experienced tremendous pressure and was hit as he threw, floating the ball into the hands of the Alberta defender. The turnover set up Alberta with excellent field position on the Ontario West 35-yard line. A 5-yard play action pass from Matthew Bonaca to Ryder Stone put Alberta in the lead 10-8. They extended the lead in the final quarter on a 32-yard touchdown connection from Bonaca to Mackenzie Meek. Alberta scored another touchdown with a Bonaca 5-yard pass to Adam Zajdel. To the delight of the home contingent the final score was Alberta 25- Ontario West 8. Alberta will now face the winner of Quebec and British Columbia in the gold medal game while Ontario West will face the loser in the bronze medal game.
