Ontario West captures bronze medal in front of hometown crowd against Sask
Ontario West behind their hometown crowd, defeated Saskatchewan 44-10 to capture the bronze medal at the 2012 Football Canada Cup hosted by the Ontario Football Alliance (OFA) at TD Waterhouse Stadium on the campus of Western University in London, Ontario.
Ontario West led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter after a 22-yard field goal by Gabriel Ferraro. The Saskatchewan offense struggled early on without the services of quarterback, Noah Picton (due to injury).
As the second quarter began, Ontario West began to seize momentum. The Ontario West lead was extended to 10 after quarterback, James Roberts found receiver, Daniel Petermann who made an outstanding end zone catch on the 31-yard play. Ontario West followed up the score by recovering a Saskatchewan onside kick which swung momentum further towards the home province. At the Saskatchewan six yard line running back, Jonathon Howard found the end zone to increase his team’s lead to 17.
Later in the half, Petermann showcased his punt return ability. After his first return for a score was negated due to a holding call, he returned the next punt to the Saskatchewan 8 yard line. Roberts capitalized on the field position taking the ball in for the major. Ontario West entered the half up 27-3 as Saskatchewan got on the board late in the first half via a 24-yard field goal.
Early in the 3rd quarter, a Saskatchewan fumble proved costly as Ontario West recovered. On the very next play a 32-yard Howard rushing touchdown, his second rushing TD on the day increased the Ontario West lead to 31.
Saskatchewan would reply as they drove down the field through the air. The drive culminated with a 15-yard touchdown pass as quarterback, Jaeden Marwick found receiver, Curtis Puetz to make the score 34-10.
Saskatchewan would try to rally and build momentum with an onside kick however Ontario West seized it back as linebacker, Ray Duplin picked up the bouncing ball in stride and returned it 55-yards for the major. The extra point was blocked making the score 40-10.
After an Ontario West rouge on the following kickoff , a 33-yard Ferraro field goal supplied the final points of the game as Ontario West defeated Saskatchewan 43-10.
With the win Ontario West finishes in 3rd place while Saskatchewan finishes 4th.
