ONTARIO WEST EVENS RECORD WITH WIN OVER ALBERTA
WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Running back Tyler Varga led Ontario West to a 33-5 victory over Team Alberta after posting a 2010 Football Canada Cup championship high of 187 yards on 13 carries. Varga’s game included a thrilling 88 yard touchdown run on his second carry of the game.
Ontario West’s lead began early in the first quarter from Varga’s touchdown and was followed by a second touchdown on their third possession when Lucas Spagnolo sprung lose on a 24 yard jaunt to the endzone.
Alberta closed the gap with a 32 yard Steven McCaffrey field goal late in the first quarter, but Ontario West replied with 12 unanswered points that included a 12 yard Daniel Ferraro field goal prior to the end of the first half along with a safety in the opening two minutes of the final quarter followed by an Alex Iessi five yard run at 3:43 of the fourth quarter.
Alberta added a team safety at the nine minute mark, while Ontario’s Bami Adewale put the nail in the coffin with a 31 yard interception in the final seconds of the game that added seven points to the tally.
Ontario West eclipsed Alberta’s offensive output with 304 net yards, compared to Alberta’s 127. The bulk of the ground work was posted by Varga, but teammates Alex Iessi and Lucas Spagnola each added 83 and 50 yards respectively to the Ontario’s efforts.
Ontario West head coach Rob Underhill was happy about his team bouncing back from their first day loss to B.C.. “We stuck to the fundamentals and basics. We tried to take away what we knew they were going to give us and we played hard”.
The bright spot for Team Alberta was receiver Conrad Whetstone’s 52 yards in receiving on two receptions. Alberta pivot, Taylor Yaremchuk, landed six passes for 71 yards on 18 attempts.
Ontario West will now prepare for Saturday, July 17 as they take on 1-1 Team Manitoba at 1:00 pm. Team Alberta will be matched up against Ontario East at 10:00 am this Saturday.
