ONTARIO WEST SPRINTS TO THE FINISH LINE IN 35-3 VICTORY OVER MANITOBA
WOLFVILLE, N.S. – A 21-3 Team Ontario West halftime lead became insurmountable, as Team Ontario West accumulated 394 yards net offence to defeat Team Manitoba 35-3. The win gave Ontario their second win of the Under 18 Football Canada Cup tournament and a fifth place finish amongst eight teams.
Under a balanced offensive attack along with pressure defense, resulting in two quarterbacks replacements due to injury, Team Ontario West dominated from the opening two field goals by Daniel Ferraro in the first quarter.
Ontario’s Max Cameron scored the first major of the day on an 85 yard reception from Chris Jugovic in the closing minutes of the first quarter. Shaquille Johnson added a second touchdown at 1:57 of the second quarter on a 17 yard reception from Lucas Spagnolo combined with a late quarter Daniel Ferraro rouge placed Team Ontario West well ahead with a 20-0 lead.
Colton Farago put Manitoba on the score board with one minute remaining in the opening half, but Kalvin Johnson’s 62 yard interception return for Ontario’s third touchdown with no time remaining on the clock before the intermission, ended any hope of a Manitoba comeback.
Ontario West’s Brett Weir ended the story on a 17 yard pass reception from Chris Jugovic. Jugovic was four for six in the air with 152 yards in sharing duties with Lucas Spagnolo who was five for 11 for 97 yards.
Running back Tyler Varga accepted his third Player of the Game award following his 96 yards on nine carry performance.
Ontario West’s strong defense was led by Peter Gray and Kalvin Johnson’s three solo tackles each. Johnson also added an interception for a touchdown and a breakup on a pass attempt by Manitoba. Andrew Graham of Ontario also added an interception for their team’s defensive effort.
