Quebec advances to gold medal game against Saskatchewan South at Under-16 Western Challenge

New Brunswick earns first win in tournament history with upset win over Ontario

New Brunswick and Quebec scored big wins at the 2018 Under-16 Eastern Challenge on Wednesday at Guelph’s Alumni Stadium.

In the earlier game, New Brunswick upset Ontario 25-22. In the nightcap, Quebec downed Nova Scotia 36-3.

With the win over Nova Scotia, Quebec moves on to the gold medal game against Saskatchewan South on Saturday July 14^th, 2018 at 1:30pm EST.  Meanwhile, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario will play a series of mini games that same day.  Those games begin at 9:00am EST and also run at 10:30am EST and 12:00pm EST.

NEW BRUNSWICK 25, ONTARIO 22:

New Brunswick got past Ontario 25-22 to earn their first win at the Under-16 Eastern Challenge for the first time since the tournament began in 2017.

The team opened the scoring with 1:13 left in the first quarter as Caulin O’Donnell sprinted into the end zone for a touchdown score.

With 11:49 left before the half, Samuel Tremblay passed the ball off to Alex Murdock who pushed his way into the end zone for a 5 yard major to take a 12-0 lead over Ontario.

However, Ontario responded back with 5:19 left before the half when Matthew Guenette gave the ball to Cedric Smith and he sprinted down into the end zone to cut down New Brunswick’s lead 12-6.

With 1:28 before the half, quarterback Samuel Tremblay sped down field to score a 62 yard rushing touchdown.

At halftime, New Brunswick enjoyed an 18-8 lead over Ontario.

In the third quarter, pivot Matthew Guenette handed the ball over to Cedric Smith who scored a 20 yard rushing major.

With 6:23 remaining in the game, New Brunswick added a major.

Ontario tried to mount a comeback in the final minutes of the game as Elijah Hartley scores a touchdown. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Offensive Players of the Game were Tremblay (New Brunswick) and Matthew Guenette (Ontario).  Defensive Players of the Game were Reid McKay (New Brunswick) and Mason Arruda (Ontario).

QUEBEC 36, NOVA SCOTIA 3:

Nova Scotia got on the scoreboard first when Owen MacRae added a 32 yard field goal.

Quebec would respond back as quarterback Kaelan Trepanier connected with Dylan Djeté with 4:37 remaining in the 1^st quarter.

Daniel Bararuhanya snuck into end zone for 1 yard major to increase Quebec’s lead.

Toward late in the second quarter, Trepanier passed off the ball to Kenzy Paul who rushed into the end zone for a 10 yard major.  Then, Trepanier connected with Tyrese Buissereth for a 20 yard touchdown reception.

At halftime, Quebec had a 28-3 advantage over Nova Scotia.

In the second half, Barthelemy Huge added 15 yard and 32 yard field goals to round out the scoring and solidify Quebec’s place in the gold medal game.

Offensive Players of the Game were Buissereth (Quebec) and Kwame Franklin (Nova Scotia).  Defensive Players of the Game were Edwin Wilson Tara Kolenge (Quebec) and Alexander MacDonald (Nova Scotia).
