Quebec-White flexes its offensive muscle in 5th place game

Quebec-White captured 5^th place on Sunday July 19 with a 51-0 win over Nova Scotia at the 2015 Football Canada Cup from Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu’s Alphonse-Desjardins Stadium in Quebec. With the win Quebec-White improved to a 2-1 tournament record, overcoming an opening day loss.

The host province’s second team came out of the gate early and often, putting up 50 points in the first half.

Quebec got out of the gates on their second possession as quarterback Philip Charpentier connected with Jacob Doucet-Bruyère who maintained his focus to bring in the 30-yard touchdown pass despite the ball being tipped by the secondary.

Down by 7 and facing 3^rd down and 1 at their own 45-yard line, Nova Scotia elected to keep their offense on the field however Quebec’s defense held strong, forcing a loss of downs. The host province capitalized on the field position once again, culminating with a 37-yard Maxime Gareau touchdown run.

Gareau reached the end zone again to open the second quarter scoring, this time on a 47-yard touchdown run to give Quebec a 21 point advantage.

Quebec continued to seize momentum on their opponent’s next drive as Louis-Philippe Leclerc blocked and recovered a Nova Scotia punt attempt at the 1-yard line. Joanik Masse took full advantage, running it in to widen the advantage to 35.

Mobile quarterback Guillaume Renaud-Demoulin added his second rushing touchdown of the half followed by quarterback Philip Charpentier’s second touchdown strike, this time to William Marchant to give Quebec a 50 point halftime advantage.

A Vincent Blanchard rouge supplied the only scoring of the second half to make the final score 51-0.

On Nova Scotia’s loss

“Overall it’s a little disappointing. We came out pretty aggressive early; kicked on-side and did some things both defensively and offensively but overall we just didn’t execute. There were little assignments within the play that we had opportunities or we were in position but we really couldn’t execute or finish the play. They were able to jump out early on us and I’m a little bit disappointed in the way we responded. We have little bit of a depth issue right now and from a conditioning and a strength standpoint to play in our third game against a real quality opponent, we’re just not there right now. As a program we’ve got to make sure we’re taking steps to address this and just get better. Overall I’m proud of the kids; they had a good tournament. We’ve just got to build the infrastructure of our program so that we can compete at a higher level moving forward.”

On the early turnover on downs which led to the 2^nd Quebec touchdown

“That was probably an early point in the game that really turned the momentum.  We really struggled to get it back, if we ever did get it back. Third and one with reasonable field position and in Canadian football with a yard off [the defence] you feel like you can get it. For whatever reason, we were unable to execute but hats off to Quebec.”

On the value of the tournament

“From a discipline standpoint and intensity and focus for the most part they did a great job for the last 14 days. To be coached by an all CIS coaching staff is big for these kids. You look at how much they’ve developed from when we first got them defensively, offensively and on special teams they’ve just improved so much and they’ve responded to the coaching which they can take back from this tournament. But also just the quality of opponent they faced. This would have been the best football these kids have ever played. A quality opponent in three straight games was great and you get better in football from playing quality opponents. A lot of these kids should return to their local programs as leaders and impact players and will certainly be ready to move forward in their career and try to make the next step.”

“I’m pretty happy with the effort these guys have given. Our goal today was to come out of the gate really fast. We felt [that] if we could set the tone and the pace we thought we could do what we intended to do and that was get the win.”

On why he a quick start was so important

“I feel like it wakes us up. When we start fast our guys get live and start playing. When they start slow, they start having a bit of doubt. I wanted these guys to play fast but to play fast we need results early on.”

On finishing with a 2-1 record

“We finished with a positive record so we’re really happy about that. The kids are really happy; they’ll go home knowing they did what they intended to do which was win. We’re really happy about winning two games, especially the last two.”
