Rosters announced for 2016 Football Canada Cup
Rosters for all eight participating teams have been announced in preparation for the 2016 Football Canada Cup taking place July 9-15 at Investors Group Field and East Side Field in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Participating under-18 provincial teams have until the team’s registration to make changes to their respective 40-man rosters. Roster modifications are restricted to players on team’s previously submitted 54-man rosters.
Rosters
1 – Québec
2 – Ontario
3 – Saskatchewan
4 – Alberta
5 – Nova Scotia
6 – Manitoba-Gold
7 – New Brunswick
8 – Manitoba-Silver (primarily represented by northwestern Ontario who, due to proximity, fall within the jurisdiction of Football Manitoba)
Team Canada standouts return
Seven players return to the Canada Cup after competing against the U.S. at the 2016 International Bowl series as members of the under-18 national team in Arlington, Texas.
They are:
- Shae Weekes, DB, Manitoba-Gold
- Joe Dutton, LB, Alberta
- Alex Fedchun, DL, Alberta
- Maguire Abell, OL, Saskatchewan
- Inho Choi, DB, Ontario
- Kevin Mitale, REC, Québec
- Charles Lavalée, OL, New Brunswick
Teams jostle for position on opening day
The opening day of action at the Canada Cup is critical as a day one loss relegates teams to the consolation side of the draw where they can finish no better than 5th while a first day victory means that teams are at least assured a top half finish.
Under first year head coach Marco Iadeluca, defending champion Quebec will look to lead La Belle Province to gold for the sixth time in seven years. While the road to a gold medal repeat will not be an easy one, they benefit from the return their starting quarterback from a year ago, Ezechiel Tiede.
In 2015, Alberta finished out of medal contention for the first time since 2010 and will look to improve their stock under new head coach, Chris Morris. In the case of an opening day win, they’ll look to evoke some revenge over rival Quebec who they’ve lost to in the bronze or gold medal game from 2011-2014.
In addition to last year’s respective silver and bronze medalists, Ontario and Saskatchewan, another team to watch is tournament host, Manitoba, who will field two teams in 2016 to even the draw out at eight. They’ll look to rally behind a hometown crowd and make a title run.
New Brunswick and Nova Scotia enter 2016 looking to improve upon disappointing finishes a year ago. They’ll look to surprise their higher ranked opening day matchups in pursuit of a podium finish.
