Jean-Simon Roy, a 2012 Junior National Team alumnus, owned the bench press on Friday night at the CFL Combine in Regina. The Laval offensive lineman led all participants with 39 reps on the bench press which was good for sixth-highest all time at the CFL Combine.

Just how good was Roy’s performance? To put it into perspective, the top result at the 2017 NFL Combine was 35 reps accomplished by both Isaac Asiata (OG, Utah) and Carl Lawson (DE, Auburn). The top-ever result at the CFL Combine was 47 reps by Michael Knill in 2011 while in 2015 another Junior National Team alum, Byron Archambault put up 41 reps.
In an interview with the CFL.ca’s Brodie Lawson, Roy revealed that his personal best was 42, but that was set two years ago. He fell one rep shy of matching his former Laval teammate, Philippe Gagnon who put up 40 a year ago.
Two Canada Cup alumni impress scouts during on-field workouts
Both Johnny Augustine (Guelph) and Daniel Vandervoort (McMaster) were among CFL.ca’s Marshall Ferguson’s early risers.
Augustine matched his impressive physical testing numbers during Saturday’s one-on-ones as the running back was asked to run routes with receivers.
According to Ferguson, Vandervoort didn’t test off the charts but helped separate himself as a top pass catcher in this year’s draft class with a solid on-field performance during one-on-ones.
Dozen alumni participate in the combine
Twelve players at the 2017 CFL Combine participated in the Football Canada Cup, International Bowl or IFAF U19 World Championships. The events are Football Canada’s high performance pathway which help identify and prepare athletes for national team competition.
